The merchant warns the man that the island has many dangers including a dreadful disease that if contracted promises certain death. The merchant tells him that the island was mysteriously abandoned by its inhabitants after they constructed several large buildings on the land. When the man runs into an Italian rug merchant in Calcutta, he learns of Villings Island. The country that is pursuing him is Venezuela, the place of his birth. ![]() It is never revealed what the man is accused of but he claims in his diary that he is innocent. ![]() Since there are so many intrinsic dangers on the island, the purpose of his daily log has another purpose: it may be his will. The man writes a diary of his experiences that he will use it as a basis for book if he is able to return to civilization. However, the reader learns that he is a fugitive from justice. Throughout the story, the man remains unidentified. The story of the novella, "The Invention of Morel" begins with an unnamed man on a rugged island in the middle of the ocean. ![]()

Having learnt the grifting trade some years back, Roy now operates in Los Angeles, the one place where it’s possible to work an extended stint without becoming too conspicuous. He’s young, smart, self-sufficient and wily, a seasoned professional with an air of respectability about him. (At the time, the typical upper limit for a short con was $1,000, while anything above this threshold was considered a ‘big con’.) A fairly unassuming guy at first sight, Roy is the kind of man who makes friends easily. The story revolves around Roy Dillon, a ‘short-con’ grifter (or con artist) living in Los Angeles. With this in mind, I turned to another leading proponent of this genre, the American writer Jim Thompson and his 1963 novel, The Grifters. I never seem to tire of these stories and their insights into the darker side of human nature. Cain’s Double Indemnity or, more recently, Simenon’s The Widow (both of which I would highly recommend).
